The word for hulu gourd (葫蘆) is homonymous with “fortune” (福祿); the phrase for “ten of thousands of centuries”(萬代) is homonymous with the word for a leaf’s veins(蔓帶). It is the instrument in which doctors used to carry their “miracle medicines”. In classic Chinese Taoism, the hulu was known for its retentive qualities and was believed to have the ability to amass qi - the essential energy. This is how the hulu came to hold medicines.
